Debtor's Anonymous

This blog is now going to be about 12 Steps in general (and of course, my experience with them) because I have been in three different programs, all with helpful aspects, but holding in common the 12 Steps. Combined with regular spiritual and emotional development, the 12 Steps are a strong and successful path to recovery.

"Step Three--Gradually, one day at a time, we invited our Higher Power to walk with us in all areas of our lives; this paved the way to a new self-acceptance."

I like this step and the language used.

"We invited"
This is a great way to see how we can acknowledge HP in our lives. I definitely feel good about inviting.

"...To walk with us in all areas of our lives..."
This really gets at the fact that HP resides everywhere, not just around our addictions and their recovery.

"...Paved the way to a new self-acceptance"
HP in our lives allows us to step back, even if just a little, to see ourselves more objectively, which can actually help us accept our human characteristics. HP already accepts us, so we can follow suit.

The below story was re-told to me by my husband (but written by Mary Stevenson), specifically regarding recovery.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
                             when I was suffering from
                         anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
      "You promised me Lord,
         that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
                                 there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

                                 The Lord replied,
                          "The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
          is when I carried you."
